(CWRU)CLEVELAND, Ohio – An assistant professor of chemistry at Case Western Reserve University is one of a dozen recipients of a new grant from amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research.

The seven-person laboratory of Blanton Tolbert, who joined CWRU in 2012, will receive $180,000 to continue work on analyzing HIV in its latent state. That's the state of the virus when it "goes silent" after replicating and moving into other, healthy cells.

Tolbert's research - an ongoing collaboration with the lab of Jonathan Karn, a professor and chairman of molecular biology and microbiology at CWRU - involves understanding how HIV takes over the body's cells to replicate.
