Kolkata: Number of HIV infections in India will increase if the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) is closed and its activities merged with the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), activists and experts said Monday.
Sixty participants representing communities of drug users, male-to-female transgenders, men who have sex with men (MSM), female sex workers (FSWs) and people living with HIV (PLHIV) from West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar gathered at the "AIDS Momentum 2022' consultative meet here.
Experts argued that in 2003 the BJP-led NDA-1 government had taken the monumental step to make anti-retroviral drugs free for patients in six states when Sushma Swaraj was the health minister.

KAMPALA - The Uganda AIDS Commission has established a committee that will scrutinize and clear all anti-HIV/AIDS campaign messages before they are disseminated to the public.
The 18-member committee is headed by Noeline Kaleeba, the founder of TASO.
Other members include Dr. Elizabeth Madraa, Robert Mwesigwa, Erik Friedly, Daudi Ochieng, Robinah Ssempebwa, and Pius Mwinganisa.
Also on the committee are; Sam Enginyu, Beatrice Bisangwa, James Yesiga, Stella Kentutsi, Paul Mukasa, Majorie Kyomuhendo, Patrick Muinda, Edward Mugyimba, Gloria Nantulya, Ssubi Kiwanuka, Agnes Biribonwa and Dr. Chris Oleke.

The Himachal Pradesh government on Tuesday issued a notification, making it mandatory for all educational institutions in the state to provide admission to children perceived to be or actually infected with HIV/AIDS.
The notification makes it compulsory for both the private and government institutions to admit children infected with HIV/AIDS. The main objective of the notification is to ensure that such children are not deprived of their legitimate right to education under the Right of Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009.
