Peduli HIV/AIDSCILEGON-Ketua Komisi Penanggulangan AIDS (KPA) Kota Cilegon, Edi Ariadi mengatakan warga kota itu semakin rawan terinfeksi virus HIV/AIDS. Selain dari pekerja seks komersial (PSK), narkoba, penyebaran virus mematikan itu juga bisa disebarkan oleh warga asing atau ekspatriat yang semakin marak bekerja di kota itu.

"Kota Cilegon ini rawan penyebaran HIV/AIDS. Sebab selain daerah transit antarpulau, juga merupakan lumbung industri. Terlebih ekspatriat banyak di sini. Termasuk warga Korea yang datang ke Kota Cilegon mungkin saja ada yang terinfeksi HIV/AIDS. Oleh sebab itu harus terus diawasi," terang Edi Ariadi yang juga Wakil Wali Kota Cilegon dalam kunjungan tim assistensi KPA Provinsi Banten ke Kota Cilegon, kemarin (29/1).

A large-scale human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) intervention/education effort aimed at helping South African men take a proactive role in the prevention of that disease has proven successful, an important development considering that country has the largest number of HIV infections in the world.

Researchers, led by Prof. John B. Jemmott, III, Annenberg School for Communication and the Perelman School of Medicine; and Loretta Sweet Jemmott, Director of the Center for Health Equity Research at Penn Nursing,* developed an intervention involving nearly 1,200 individuals, who participated in customized and proactive education programs on condom usage and the importance of discussing safe sex in their relationships. The results of their study are being reported this week in the American Journal of Public Health (Volume 104, Issue 2).

More than 30 percent of young males who had sex with other males and who were subsequently enrolled in a government treatment and research network were found to have high levels of HIV, reported researchers from the National Institutes of Health and other institutions.

The health status of the study participants, who ranged in age from 12 to 24 years, was monitored as part of their participation in the Adolescent Medicine Trials Network for HIV/AIDS Interventions (ATN). The ATN provides medical care to youth with HIV and offers counseling and, medications, and other preventive measures to youth who are at risk of acquiring HIV. As part of their participation in the network, the youth have the option of taking part in research studies of the latest methods to prevent people from acquiring HIV and to treat those who have become infected.
