BOGOTA (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Anti-gay laws and cultural attitudes are preventing the most vulnerable people accessing HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment programmes in parts of the Caribbean, UNAIDS and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has said.

With adult HIV prevalence at about one percent of the population, the Caribbean has the second highest infection rate of HIV/AIDS in the world after sub-Saharan Africa, according to UNAIDS. An estimated 250,000 people, including children, are infected with the virus in the Caribbean.

Better access to drugs that can both prevent and treat the incurable human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS has cut the death toll and led to a sharp decline in new HIV infections in the Caribbean and worldwide since 2001.

MBABANE – NERCHA has affirmed that door-to-door HIV testing is critical to the HIV and AIDS response. NERCHA is an acronym for the National Emergency Response Council on HIV and AIDS.

This is contrary to recent newspaper reports that a door-to-door strategy forHIV testing is 'unworkable'.
NERCHA Head of Information and Communication Mandla Luphondvo said HIV testing and counselling is a critical entry point to prevention, treatment, care and support.

Luphondvo said the door-to-door approach to HIV testing was never an out-of-the-blue strategy. He said the strategy was conceptualised after observing that the uptake of HIV testing and counselling (HTC) was very low.

Merdeka.com - Wali Kota Bogor Bima Arya Sugiarto terkejut penderita HIV/AIDS di kota tersebut menempati peringkat ketiga terbanyak di Jawa Barat.

"Ternyata Kota Bogor itu jumlah penderita HIV/AIDS nya terbanyak, peringkat ketiga di Jawa Barat dan peringkat kelima di Indonesia," ujar Bima usai meninjau ruang VCT di Puskesmas Bogor Timur, Selasa (8/4).

Bima menyebutkan fakta tersebut sangat memprihatinkan sehingga perlu penanganan serius agar jumlah penderita dapat ditekan dan pencegahan dapat dilakukan.

LONDON - Mengetes HIV/AIDS bakal jauh lebih mudah dan tidak memalukan lagi di Inggris. Sebab, mereka bisa membeli alat pengetes personal dan melakukan tes sendiri di rumah. Sebelumnya, ada larangan penjualan alat tes itu.

Namun, Minggu (6/4) pengadilan mencabut larangan tersebut. Sayangnya, alat tes itu belum beredar di pasaran. Warga Inggris baru bisa membeli akhir tahun ini atau paling lambat pada 2015.

Sebelumnya, warga Inggris bisa melakukan tes di rumah, tetapi tidak sepenuhnya. Mereka mengorder alat secara online. Setelah dites, hasilnya dikirimkan ke pabrik ataupun distributor alat tersebut, lantas dibacakan via telepon.

KOMPAS.com -- Mahkamah Agung (MA) Filipina akhirnya menegaskan berlakunya Undang-Undang Kesehatan Reproduksi secara konstitusional. Menurut Juru Bicara MA Filipina Theodore Teh, lembaga tertinggi itu menghapuskan beberapa ketentuan di dalam peraturan itu, kata warta AP pada Selasa (8/4/2014).

Kendati begitu, para hakim agung di MA memang belum berada dalam satu kata ihwal keputusan konstitusional itu. Menurut Teh, para hakim agung yang belum sepakat sudah mengeluarkan opini berbeda (dissenting opinion). "Kritik dari Gereja Katolik menjadi salah satu pemicu beda pendapat," kata Theodore Teh.
