An Australian researcher says the current response to HIV/AIDS in West Papua is being dominated by an Indonesian perspective and international models.
Jenny Munro is a cultural anthropologist at the Australian National University, and been involved in recent studies on HIV/AIDS in the Indonesian province.
She told Bridget Tunnicliffe the virus is considered to be at epidemic levels in West Papua.

METRO Manila mobile phone users can now text for HIV and AIDS consultation and treatment.
The Philippine National AIDS Council and Globe Telecommunications are piloting TXT HIV to 8504, a campaign that provides information and referral to HIV counseling, testing, and life-saving treatment programs.
The campaign was launched on Friday at no extra cost to Globe mobile subscribers for one year.

"Stigma and lack of knowledge about HIV & AIDS" was the topic of a compelling presentation by Pro-Chancellor of the University of Guyana Prem Misir, who launched his first health book in front of expatriates at the Consulate General of Guyana in New York City, recently.
The former associate public health epidemiologist of the Bureau of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control of NY City was motivated to write "HIV&AIDS Knowledge and Stigma in Guyana" after conducting interviews with N.Y. residents where discrimination and stigma among all races were evident.
Misir, a professor in Public Health at the University of Central Lancaster in England, said his interest in how the disease is transmitted and how stigma impacts awareness, peaked his interest and led him to publish this fundamental tool that will be used by health professionals, educators and policymakers throughout the Caribbean region.

No single measure currently available will eliminate HIV infections in South Africa, but a broad array of 'combination-prevention' measures is required.
The release this week of a report suggesting South Africa has the world's highest rate of HIV infections highlights the urgent need for an array of measures to lower infection risk, including medical male circumcision (MMC).
Dr Don Pupuma, a CareWorks clinical consultant and family physician in private practice in Soweto says that no single measure currently available will eliminate HIV infections, but that a broad array of 'combination-prevention' measures is required.
