Solopos.com, SRAGEN – Sebanyak 14 bayi di Kabupaten Sragen terdeteksi mengidap HIV/AIDS. Para bayi tersebut tertular dari ibu mereka yang sebelumnya terjangkit HIV/AIDS.

Hal itu disampaikan Koordinator Kelompok Dukungan Sebaya (KDS) Sukowati, Ririn, saat ditemui wartawan di sela-sela Workshop Kewaspadaan Bahaya HIV/AIDS dan Upaya Pencegahannya di Pendapa Sumonegaran, Rumah Dinas Bupati Sragen, Selasa (26/8/2014). "Ada 14 bayi [mengidap HIV/AIDs] di Sragen yang tertular dari ibunya," jelas dia.

Ririn menjelaskan bayi-bayi tersebut berusia antara satu tahun hingga tujuh tahun. Para bayi itu, lanjut dia, saat ini menjalani pengobatan di rumah sakit yang ada di Sragen serta Solo. Disinyalir, jumlah bayi yang tertular HIV/AIDS lebih banyak ketimbang data saat ini tercatat oleh KDS Sukowati.

BANGKOK—Thailand's young people are facing a new rise in HIV infections - the virus that causes AIDS. Researchers say they are finding it tougher to reach at-risk populations with messages about safer sex.

In a report released Monday, UNICEF says 70 percent of all sexually transmitted HIV infection cases in Thailand are occurring among people between the ages of 15 and 24.

The report says despite a gradual drop in the overall prevalence of HIV in the country during the past two decades, new infections are now rising -- especially among young people involved in the sex trade, injecting drugs and young men having unprotected sex with men.

Health activists in Thailand note that one of the current challenges in HIV prevention is reaching those engaging in higher-risk behavior.

Balikpapan. Andi Muhammad Aslam's journey of activism began 11 years ago, when he sought an escape from routine by visiting a house of a relative in Bontang, East Kalimantan.

The resource-rich city is known as one of the richest regions in Indonesia thanks to its natural gas production, but Aslam happened to stay near one of the darkest corners of the "city of gas," namely the red-light district of Prakla.

He was alone in those days in 2003, wandering aimlessly around nearby fishing villages, ports and tourist sites, when he stumbled upon the prostitution area.

Although HIV and Aids have highly been demystified, the government is warning of dire consequences if the current behavioural trend continue.

According to statistics on the effects of the disease that continues to tear families apart while affecting the overall performance of the economy, Homa Bay has been ranked as the county with the highest new HIV/Aids infection rate, with Nairobi bearing the burden of most people living with the deadly virus at 177,552.

Sadly still, six out of nine counties that account for 65 per cent of new infections countrywide are from the former Nyanza province, with the other three, Nakuru, Turkana and Bomet, Rift Valley.

President John Dramani Mahama last Friday said Ghana had the potential to reduce the incidence of HIV and AIDS new infections to zero per cent if proper regulations are adhered to.

He said currently, government had managed to reduce the prevalence rate of new infections from 12,000 to 7,000 new infections for the past few years, whiles the national prevalence rate had also reduced from four per cent to 1.3 per cent at the same period.

President Mahama said this when Mr Michel Sibide, United Nations Executive Director called on him at the Flagstaff House, Kanda.
