BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — There has been an increase in the number of elderly persons contracting HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases as they venture outside the home seeking romantic encounters, says Cephus Sealey, chairman of the National Assistance Board.
Expressing concern about what he described as risky sexual practices among mature Barbadians, Sealey said Wednesday: "Johns are becoming older, as they seek sexual gratification outside the home, they inadvertently place themselves at risk of contracting SDIs (socially transmitted illnesses) and passing it on to their unsuspecting partners."

A new joint initiative has been launched to increase HIV testing and treatment uptake in Indonesia, where government efforts to roll out universal access to antiretroviral (ARV) therapy have been hampered by low numbers of people presenting for HIV testing.
The project is funded by Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, with AU$2 million over four years. It is a collaboration between the World Health Organization (WHO), the Kirby Institute, the Indonesian Health Ministry and the National AIDS Program, as well as three leading Indonesian universities — Padjadjaran University in Bandung, Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta and Udayana University in Bali.

ABUJA — Nearly a month into a nationwide doctor's strike, HIV/AIDS patients in some parts of northern Nigeria say health care is rapidly declining, and they have become largely dependent upon foreign aid organizations. Doctors say the strike is the only way they know to rescue Nigeria's flailing healthcare system, but nurses accuse strikers of abandoning public care in favor of more lucrative private practices.
The Nigerian Medical Association said about 30,000 members have been on strike since the beginning of July, breaking the strike only to provide emergency care for victims of frequent insurgent attacks.

Ishmael Baya is a street beggar who calls an old shack and waiting shelter at Blantyre's Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital home.
"In the morning, I go to the streets and ask for alms," he told Anadolu Agency (AA) on a cold Wednesday.
"I have no place to call my own, no food and no clothes," said Baya, wearing only a shirt and a torn pair of trousers.
He is one of over 40 street beggars who live in the hospital's abandoned waiting shelter and who survive on alms from passersby and Muslims who attend prayers at a nearby mosque only a stone's throw from the government hospital.
"We have been receiving a lot of help from our Muslim brothers. They give us a lot of food and clothes," said Baya before running over to a passing car to ask for small change.
