This week's lead story on how schools are dealing with the challenge of HIV-infected students, while encouraging, illustrates just how far we still have to go in the fight against the killer pandemic in our midst.

The story features the experiences of two HIV-positive students who had the courage to share their status with a teacher at school. As a result, both are afforded considerable flexibility in a number of areas of school life so that they can access proper medical attention without negatively impacting their studies.

TEMPO/ SubektiTEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Dibandingkan satu dekade lalu, tercatat lebih banyak orang Indonesia yang meninggal karena HIV/AIDS, namun demikian lebih sedikit orang Indonesia yang meninggal karena tuberkulosa dan malaria, demikian menurut data terbaru, yang ditunjukkan oleh satu tinjauan tren analisa data menggunakan metode yang hanya ada satu di dunia.

Kecepatan penurunan angka kematian karena malaria serta infeksi dari malaria terjadi sejak tahun 2000, ketika Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) dicanangkan di seluruh dunia dalam rangka menghentikan penyebaran penyakit-penyakit tersebut pada tahun 2015.

MELBOURNE, Australia, July 23, 2014 /CNW/ - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Health, participated in the 20th International AIDS Conference this week in Melbourne, Australia. During the Conference sessions, meetings and side events, Minister Ambrose reinforced Canada's continued commitment to global efforts to address HIV/AIDS and to advancing a comprehensive and integrated long-term approach to address HIV/AIDS in Canada.

While in Melbourne, Minister Ambrose toured the Burnet Institute, an organization that links medical research with public health action, to learn about innovative Australian research that aligns with Canadian and global health research and priorities on HIV/AIDS. In addition, Minister Ambrose and members of the International Indigenous Working Group on HIV/AIDS (IIWGHA) visited Victorian Aboriginal Health Services (VAHS) to learn about some of its initiatives and services that address the health needs of Indigenous communities and to share wise and promising practices.

A sex worker in Kenya (file photo). Photo: Siegfried Modola/IRIN Prof. Zoakah Ibrahim, a physician with the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, on Tuesday called on the government to decentralise HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment services.

Ibrahim made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He said the decentralisation of the services would reduce rate of infection.

"Decentralising the services will increase access to care and improve health outcomes.

" HIV is increasingly affecting the health and welfare of Nigerians and undermining hard-won gains in child survival recorded in the past."

(Photo: David Kim)Dengan bantuan dana dari Departemen Luar Negeri Australia (DFAT), Indonesia akan meluncurkan program Test and Treat (Uji dan Obati) bagi penderita HIV/AIDS. Peresmian program ini dilakukan di Melbourne hari Selasa (22/7/2014) dihadiri Menteri Kesehatan Indonesia Nafsiah Mboi.

Selain DFAT, lembaga lain di Australia yang terlibat dalam proyek ini adalah Kirby Institute yang berkedudukan di Sydney.

Dalam keterangannya kepada sekitar 100 orang yang hadir di Club 23 Crown Towers, Prof David Cooper dari Kirby Institute menjelaskan pentingnya proyek Uji dan Obati penderita HIV/AIDS di Indonesia tersebut.
