PROVING that the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the country is already "fast and furious", the Department of Health (DOH) reported Saturday more than 500 new cases for the third straight month.

Based on the latest Philippine HIV/AIDS Registry Report, there were 565 new HIV cases recorded in September this year following the 585 in July and 509 in August.

The number brings to 4,473 the number of HIV cases recorded in just the first nine months of the year, with 406 already developing into AIDS cases and 126 deaths.

An estimated 224,488 persons are living with HIV/AIDS in the country, 2013 sentinel report on HIV/AIDS prevalence has revealed.

According to the report conducted in all the 40 national HIV/AIDS sentinel sites, though national HIV/AIDS prevalence dropped marginally from 2.9 percent in 2012, to 1.9 percent in 2013, 7,812 new infections were recorded.

The new infections are made up of 5,405 adults, and 2,407 children, Mr Emmanuel Obeng-Hinneh, Brong-Ahafo Regional Focal Persons on HIV/AIDS disclosed on Friday.

Salah satu ODHA di Kota Manado, Hermin, Jumat, meminta pelayanan dasar kesehatan seperti pengobatan ARV secara memadai, pemberian nutrisi serta pemberian pelatihan harus diutamakan.

Hal lain yang penting adalah menghapus stigma bahwa ODHA selalu "terpinggirkan" secara sosial di tengah masyarakat.

"Kami tahu Menkes yang baru punya program-program penting tentang ODHA, sehingga diharapkan semuanya berjalan dengan baik," katanya.

Speaking during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Amref Health Africa and UNFPA in Nairobi, Kenya, Laura Laski, the chief of sexual and reproductive health at UNFPA, said the partnership would strengthen health systems by training midwives to enable them respond to maternal, neonatal and adolescent health-related issues.

"UNFPA values Amref Health Africa because you are an African international organisation that has experience in building capacity on the continent, and particularly in training midwives," said Laski.

Saat berpidato sebagai duta MAC Cosmetics 2015 (produk kosmetik yang berpartisipasi dalam penggalangan dana HIV/AIDS), Miley mengajak para kaum muda untuk meningkatkan kesadaran terhadap penyakit mematikan ini.

"Jika saya punya suara, saya ingin memulai dialog terbuka tentang pencegahan dan kesadaran mengenai begitu banyaknya orang-orang di dunia yang terjangkit HIV dan AIDS," ungkapnya dilansir Aceshowbiz.
