As HIV/Aids infection rates lowers in Dar es Salaam, the Regional Commissioner Said Meck Sadick has directed authorities in the three city municipals to include the war against the disease in their list of priorities warning of its negative direct effects on the city's human resource size and capacity.
Sadick issued the order early this week when receiving a survey report carried out by the Tanzania Commission for Aids (Tacaids) in Dar es Salaam.
According to the report, despite the decrease in new infections from 10.9 per cent in 2004, 8.9 in 2008 to 6.9 in 2012 there must be concerted efforts to ensure that they drop further.

Statement from the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation ahead of the 20th International AIDS Conference
WASHINGTON, July 17, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As the global HIV/AIDS community gathers for the 20th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2014) in Melbourne, Australia, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) urges conference delegates, policy makers, non-governmental organizations, and ministries of health around the world to prioritize children who are living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.

"We know how to end AIDS in children now," said Charles Lyons, EGPAF president and CEO. "We are on the cusp of eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV globally. EGPAF is helping mothers, clinics, and nations end the threat of AIDS to children worldwide. To date, we have reached 20 million women with services to prevent them from passing HIV on to their babies, and we will continue our work until no child has AIDS."

Today, The Age has turned its masthead red in support of the 20th International AIDS Conference and all it stands for. Over the next week, about 14,000 people from more than 200 countries, including Nobel laureates, leading scientists, government officials and people living with HIV, are convening in Melbourne to assess how far the world has come in the fight against HIV/AIDS, and to seek consensus on what more needs to be done.
The meeting, the largest medical gathering in Australia's history, has great progress to celebrate. In less than three decades, the discovery of antiretrovrial therapy has transformed HIV into a chronic but manageable disease, saving millions of lives and giving many more people near normal life expectancy. While treatment remains out of reach for many, safe and effective drugs are available to nearly all who need them in high-income countries, and in low and middle-income countries the number of people receiving treatment has increased from tens of thousands in 2002 to nearly 10 million last year.
